Cancer remains a serious health issue in Nigeria, ravaging lives as they battle the the deadly disease. Sadly, many cancer patients are being sold false hope through unproven treatments promoted on social media and word of mouth. Claims that certain fruits, herbs, and leaves can cure cancer are popular, yet medically unfounded. As Gloria’s story shows, these alternative treatments can end up harming or even killing vulnerable patients.

Gloria’s breast cancer journey began in 2016 when she discovered a lump in her breast. After tests confirmed a malignant tumor, doctors recommended chemotherapy and radiotherapy. However, Gloria hesitanted because of known side effects and costs of conventional treatment. When her aunt died of cancer after seeking alternative remedies, it prompted Gloria to return to the hospital.

Gloria’s cancer returned in 2019, spreading to her leg. By then, she realized traditional herbal treatments held no scientific methods. Practitioners like Shiva multi ventures and Jawesola sell this hope of alternative medicine to cancer patients but there is no evidence these methods cure cancer.

Dr. Dr Oluwatobiloba Oyekanmi from the Forward Operating Base sickbay clarified that pineapple has no proven cancer-fighting properties, despite popular claims of an “anti-cancer” enzyme. While pineapple contains nutrients and fiber, its health benefits do not extend to curing cancer.

To curb the spread of this medical misinformation, health authorities must increase awareness on social media and in local communities.
